What Conditions Can Acupuncture Treat?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of alternative medicine. This practice originated in Asia and has been around for thousands of years. Acupuncture involves inserting needles at certain pressures points on the body. This practice has drawn criticism for many experts in the medical world, but others have noted that the potential health benefits of acupuncture. Below are some of the medical conditions that can be treated with acupuncture:

High blood pressure

High blood pressure is a serious medical condition that affects over a third of the adult population in America. Medications are usually prescribed to treat this condition, but they do not come without side effects. That is why some health care professionals recommend acupuncture to their patients.
There was a clinical study done where hypertensive patients were given a series of 12 acupuncture treatments. One of the patients in the study had an average blood pressure of 145/95. His blood pressure dropped to 130/80 after 12 acupuncture treatments. He now gets acupuncture on a regular basis and his average blood pressure is 125/75.

Depression

Depression is an illness that affects approximately over 12 million women in America. It is characterized by chronic feelings of hopelessness and sadness. There was a twelve week study done that involved 34 women who had been diagnosed with depression. The results of the study were that over 50 percent of the women noticed an improvement after 12 weeks.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition that is characterized by chronic periods of elevated blood sugar. It affects approximately eight percent of the general population. Studies have shown that diabetics who get acupuncture on a regular basis are better able to control their blood sugar.
High blood pressure, depression and diabetes are just a few of the many conditions that can be treated with acupuncture.
