Few things wreak as much havoc on your skin as the natural aging process. Dermal Fillers restore what aging takes away.
How Dermal Fillers Restore What Aging Takes Away
As you age, your face naturally loses its subcutaneous fat. This means that your face loses its natural softness, the kind that makes you look youthful. With this loss, the facial muscles work closer to the surface of your skin, which makes crow’s feet and smile lines more noticeable. Dermal fillers work to restore fullness and volume to your face while diminishing facial lines. Fillers can plump up lips that have thinned out, boost shallow contours, soften wrinkles and creases and improve the look of sunken scars.
Dermal fillers are a type of gel that aesthetic medical specialists inject beneath your skin to restore the loss of volume. Fillers soften creases and smooth lines that have developed due to age. Every year, more than 1 million men and women seek dermal filler treatments. These treatments are an affordable way to look younger without requiring surgery or downtime.
While dermal fillers are often referred to as wrinkle fillers in the cosmetic industry, the treatment is able to do much more. Fillers decrease the appearance of vertical lip lines, plump up lips and smooth out chin creases. Fillers can even give your facial features better symmetry.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers
Hyaluronic acid is a substance that your body makes on its own naturally. It keeps your skin looking pleasantly plump and hydrated. As we age, our bodies produce less of the substance. Less hyaluronic acid production comes with side effects like loss of skin elasticity and facial fullness associated with youth.
In dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid is soft and gel-like. Researchers have modified the substance using cross-linked technology; the modification allows the substance to keep giving you a more youthful appearance for anywhere from six to 18 months depending on how it’s used and how your body reacts to it. Dermal fillers like Belotero, Juvéderm and Restylane feature hyaluronic acid.
Belotero Balance
Belotero is unique because it has proprietary technology. Basically, the molecules that form the product are connected differently. The molecule connection determines how the hyaluronic acid functions once it’s been injected. With Belotero, the technology used is called Cohesive Polydensified Matrix, and it makes Belotero more elastic than other fillers. This means that the product can be distributed more evenly following an injection, which makes seamless transitions between the areas that are treated and the ones that aren’t. Other fillers could clump. The product’s technology allows your aesthetic medical specialist to inject it closer to the surface of your skin, so less is needed to make a difference.
Juvederm Fillers
Juvederm is a collection of dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid. These fillers feature a little lidocaine, an injectable anesthetic. From the makers of BOTOX, these fillers separate themselves from the crowd as a cushioning agent. Like other fillers, Juvederm fillers replenish your body’s hyaluronic acid to give you a more youthful appearance.
Juvederm fillers are used for
- facial anti-aging, filling in wrinkles and folds
- improved lip enhancement and symmetry
- cheek augmentation
- jowl lifting
- under eye rejuvenation
Juvederm fillers last from six months to two years, depending on the specific product and treatment area.
Restylane Fillers
Restylane products are similar to Juvederm fillers with some differences. The Restylane family of dermal fillers:
- smooth wrinkles and folds
- plump lips and soften vertical lip lines
- lift and volumize cheeks
- smooth under eyes
Restylane fillers accomplish these benefits without affecting your ability to make the appropriate facial expressions. Like Juvederm, Restylane contains injectable lidocaine to ensure comfort during treatment.
Sculptra Aesthetic
Sculptra Aesthetic is a different kind of dermal filler. To smooth out the signs of aging, Sculptra uses poly-L-lactic acid. This is a product that the medical community has been using for years with dissolvable stitches. If you opt to fight back against aging with Sculptra, then your aesthetic medical specialist will inject the product into the deepest layers of the skin to support your body as it naturally produces collagen.
Along with adding volume to the skin upon being injected initially, Sculptra continues working by triggering your body’s natural collagen production as your body takes it in. This is beneficial because it keeps working even as your body absorbs it. With Sculptra, you’ll continue to see results as time passes. It is popular for patients who have substantial volume loss and need fundamental structure for other types of fillers.
Dermal Fillers vs. Botox: What’s the Difference?
While dermal fillers and Botox both diminish the signs of aging, they perform different functions. Botox decreases the activity of the muscles in your face that cause fine lines, and it is one of the most well-known cosmetic treatment options. Facial fillers are used to treat a lack of volume and facial structure and contouring. When brought together, Botox can reduce the appearance of fine lines in the upper face while fillers improve facial symmetry, fullness, and contours in the lower and mid-face.

Dermal Fillers FAQ
Since dermal fillers are injected into your skin, it’s understandable that you have questions about the process. You may be wondering if it will be painful to have the treatment or which areas can be treated. We know that you may have concerns about safety and cost as well as how long they last. While it’s important to get these questions answered by a licensed aesthetic injector, as every patient is different, general answers to these questions are below.
Do filler injections hurt? Is numbing used?
Most dermal fillers contain lidocaine, an injectable anesthetic. However, we can apply topical numbing and/or ice prior to that first poke to improve your comfort during the procedure. Most patients describe the sensation of injectables as tolerable.
What areas can be treated using dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers can enhance, smooth, or provide symmetry to virtually any area on the face, neck, and even the hands. Dermal fillers are formulated for the following areas:
- under eyes
- cheeks
- accordion lines around the mouth
- nasolabial folds between the nose and upper lip
- lip enhancement, smoothing, and symmetry
- marionette lines from the lower lip to the chin
- chin smoothing and enhancement
- lower face lifting
- neck smoothing
- hand rejuvenation
Botox addresses frown lines (lines between the eyebrows), crow’s feet, forehead lines, and bunny lines (lines that form in the upper bridge of the nose).
Are dermal fillers safe?
It’s highly uncommon for people to experience serious complications from a dermal filler treatment. Most side-effects are mild and go away after a few days, such as swelling and bruising. More serious side effects are rare and are avoided when receiving treatment from an experienced, licensed provider. We only use FDA-approved dermal fillers at Ultra Smooth Skin.
How much do dermal fillers cost?
Dermal filler costs vary based on:
- filler used
- the amount of filler required to get results
- where you are located
- the qualifications and experience of the providers
Lower cost does not mean a greater value, as lower-costs can often mean lack of experience and poor results.

How long do dermal fillers last?
How long dermal fillers last depends on which one you choose, where you’re having it injected, and what your body chemistry is like. Overall, denser products that are injected deeply (such as the cheeks) will last longer than lighter ones that are injected closer to the surface (like the lips). If you like the results and want to maintain them, you can have the treatment repeated. Your aesthetic medical specialist may adjust the amount being used and the injection technique to give you the best results.
All dermal fillers are temporary, but their longevity varies. Most dermal fillers last anywhere from six months to two years. Discuss filler longevity during your consultation.
Can I get dermal fillers and Botox together?
Yes! In fact, many patients will get both treatments at the same time. Botox lasts 3-4 months, however, so plan to come in more often for maintenance with Botox than with dermal filler treatments.
