Laser hair removal is the technique of destroying unwanted hair follicles with pulses of light. It is most important to go over any allergies or past skin reactions with your licensed aesthetic professional before the procedure. Once you set the dates (and/or possible touch-up sessions), there are some ways that you can prepare for the treatment to assure that you protect your skin and achieve the best results.
- One of the most crucial and time-sensitive tips is to avoid the sun and tanning. Some licensed aesthetic professionals recommend you stay out of the sun for up to six weeks before your laser hair removal treatment. A tan on your skin can result in the laser causing skin lightening or pigmentation.
- Avoid waxing and plucking up to six weeks before your first session. These types of hair removal disturb the follicle, making it harder for the laser to identify them.
- You should shave the day before your treatment. Shaving preserves the hair shaft and follicle unlike waxing and plucking, but more importantly for your health, shaving with a clean, new razor actually rids the skin of lingering bacteria that can interfere with your laser treatment.
- Lastly, consider taking photographs before each session (your licensed aesthetic professional may do this on treatment day) so that you can document your own results.
Laser treatment is usually a commitment to several sessions, but it is worth it. Make sure that you stay relaxed during your laser treatment. If you get nervous or anxious, do not have caffeine before your session to ensure you will be relaxed and still. Also, discuss the procedure and the intended results so that you can grasp a better idea of what to expect.
